Embracing New Beginnings, One Walk at a Time

My very first BLOG post – by Caroline Pinter
And I couldn’t be more excited! What I’d like to know is: Are you my first reader? Can you also feel the excitement and the nerves at the same time?
Doing something for the first time—like moving to the Netherlands—is both thrilling and a bit scary because everything is new. But the most important thing is that you’re doing it, taking steps forward.
Starting this blog is my next step, as I move forward as an expat/walk-and-talk coach. I’m excited to find my voice and share my passion for walking and talking. I love being outdoors, whether walking with the sun on my face or strolling with an umbrella in the rain.
What are you excited about that also makes you a bit nervous? What are the personal challenges you face when starting (or already living) a new life in the Netherlands?

Walking: More Than Just Moving

Walking is one of the simplest things to do. We do it every day—whether it’s running errands, taking the kids to school, walking the dog, or going to work.
Yet, I often hear people say that it can also be one of the hardest things to do—not walking to the supermarket, but finding the time to walk for fun or relaxation.
For me, walking gives me space to slow down. It clears my head, fills my lungs with fresh air, and sparks creativity. Even a short 15-minute walk leaves me feeling more confident and positive. It’s a great way to take a break during lunch, refocus when you’re struggling to concentrate, or get unstuck while solving a problem. The outdoors literally gives you fresh air and fresh ideas.

The Power of Company

One of the most beautiful things about walking together is that it creates the perfect opportunity to talk. Whether you’re walking with me as your coach or with another expat, sharing your story can make you realize that you’re not alone in your experiences. I’ve learned that walking outside creates a much more relaxed atmosphere. Trust and respect come naturally in nature.
Are you feeling isolated in your new environment? Having a walking companion can be incredibly supportive. It’s a wonderful way to build the connection that’s so important for feeling at home.

Exploring Your New World

Walking doesn’t only give you a chance to clear your mind—it also helps you get to know the world around you better.
When I visit a new city, whether abroad or in the Netherlands, I always try to walk as much as I can. It’s the best way to feel the city. I look around, notice the details, and search for authenticity. While I look for landmarks and highlights, what I really enjoy most is exploring and finding my own personal connection to the place.
There’s nothing more important than being yourself, especially when you’re in a new city or country. I love looking for parks, rivers, statues, or anything worth capturing through my camera lens. Photography is another passion of mine!

Our Next Step

Just like with anything else, practice makes perfect—or at least better! For me, that means becoming a good blogger and, eventually, an excellent one. Just like with everything else, it’s important to take time for yourself – to look inward and give yourself the space to grow and learn.
Walking is a wonderful tool for helping you find calm and balance. It lets you embrace your new life at your own pace, in a rhythm that feels right for you, no matter where you are or what your next step is.
If you’re looking for support in your new adventure, I’d love to walk with you—literally and figuratively. I’ll continue sharing my stories in my weekly blogs, and you’re always welcome to reach out.

I look forward to taking the next step with you!
