Discover Dutch Culture with the Museumkaart

A smart and inspiring way to explore the Netherlands
If you love art, history, architecture, or simply wandering through beautiful spaces , the Dutch Museumkaart is a must-have. With access to over 500 museums across the Netherlands, it’s one of the best ways to get to know the rich and varied culture of your new home.
As an expat, I’ve found the Museumkaart not only practical, but also a gentle and inspiring invitation to connect with Dutch life at my own pace.

  Why it’s great for expats

  • Affordable access to major museums like the Rijksmuseum, Mauritshuis, and Van Gogh Museum , as well as hundreds of smaller, local gems.
  • It encourages slow exploration, no need to rush through a museum in one visit. You can return as often as you like.
  • Great for rainy days, solo weekends, or visits with family and friends.
  • It’s also a conversation starter , Dutch people love their museums and often share tips or personal favorites.

 How it works

  • Price: around €75 per year for adults (2025 rate).
  • Valid for 1 year from the date of activation.
  • You can order it online or buy a temporary pass at participating museums and upgrade it later.

My personal favorites

I’ve used the Museumkaart myself for many years, and it continues to bring joy and inspiration. Some museums I return to every year, they’ve become favorites I never get tired of.
A few highlights I love revisiting:
  • Museum BroekerVeiling in Alkmaar. The world’s oldest sail-through vegetable auction, full of Dutch ingenuity.
  • Hortus Botanicus Leiden, a peaceful oasis of plants and history in the heart of Leiden University.
  • Louwman Museum, an unexpected favorite with a world-class collection of classic cars and design in Wassenaar.
  • Museum Zwarte Tulp in Lisse, a tribute to the tulip and flower culture that’s so deeply rooted in Dutch life.
  • Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder in Amsterdam, a hidden 17th-century Catholic church in the attic of an Amsterdam canal house.
Each museum offers more than just art or history, they offer atmosphere, surprise, and moments of reflection. And having the Museumkaart makes it easy to revisit them, again and again.

Explore Holland your way

The Museumkaart is not just about checking off museums — it’s about giving yourself time and space to be curious, to learn, to slow down. That’s something I always encourage in my coaching too: creating room for reflection, inspiration, and joy.
Whether you’re new in the Netherlands or have lived here for a while, the Museumkaart is a beautiful tool to connect with your surroundings — and maybe even with yourself.
